Hydro One Selects AtkinsRéalis to Support Bowmanville Substation Upgrade
AtkinsRéalis Group Inc. has been selected by Hydro One Networks Inc. for a multi-year Owner’s Engineer mandate to expand the Bowmanville Switching Station in Ontario. The project will enable grid connection of Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) planned Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) at the Darlington New Nuclear Project.
Located near the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, the expansion will include construction of a new 500 kV switchyard, doubling the station’s capacity and expanding the site by an estimated 30–40 acres. The additional capacity will help meet growing electricity demand in southern Ontario, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area, which faces increasing consumption driven by electrified transit projects such as GO Transit and the Ontario Line.
Ian L. Edwards, President and CEO of AtkinsRéalis, said the project aligns with the company’s long-standing role in delivering major clean energy infrastructure globally. Stéphanie Vaillancourt, President of AtkinsRéalis Canada, added that the contract underscores the firm’s national expertise in transmission and distribution work and strengthens its relationship with Hydro One.
AtkinsRéalis will provide engineering, project, and program management services for the expansion, which is expected to be completed before the four SMRs come online.
