New Substation and Transmission Line Underway in Northwest Ohio by FirstEnergy
FirstEnergy has commenced construction on a significant power grid reliability project in Fulton County, Ohio, aimed at strengthening electricity service for residents and businesses served by Toledo Edison, a FirstEnergy electric company.
The project, led by American Transmission Systems, Inc. (ATSI), a FirstEnergy Transmission subsidiary, includes the development of a new substation and a nine-mile-long 345-kilovolt (kV) transmission line. This infrastructure upgrade will connect to the existing Sydney Substation through two new half-mile power lines, improving grid flexibility and resilience.
Scheduled for completion by December 2026, the new substation will help reduce power outages, enhance the speed of restoration during outages, and accommodate future growth in the region. This upgrade supports communities in Delta Village, Fulton, Pike, Swan Creek, and York townships.
Since 2014, FirstEnergy's transmission companies have reduced outages on high-voltage lines by 50%, demonstrating the effectiveness of their ongoing grid modernization efforts.
This initiative is part of Energize365, a $28 billion investment program by FirstEnergy to modernize the electric grid nationwide between 2025 and 2029. In northwest Ohio alone, ATSI plans to invest over $200 million in grid enhancements to ensure a smarter, more secure power system for today and the future.
