NYSEG Upgrades Bath Substation with New 56 MVA Transformer
New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has installed a new 56 MVA transformer at the Bath Substation in Steuben County to enhance electricity capacity and reliability for over 4,700 customers.
Marc Geaumont, president of NYSEG, stated that the upgrade strengthens the local power grid and ensures reliable electricity for everyday needs, from HVAC systems to critical medical equipment. The substation, originally built in 1928, had its previous transformer in service since 2003.
The project follows a notable power outage in February 2014, caused by a failed insulator, which left hundreds of Bath residents without electricity for approximately five hours.
Looking ahead, NYSEG plans a full rebuild of the Bath Substation starting in 2026. The upgraded facility will include two new transformers, additional circuits, a new control house, and other modern electric infrastructure. The $146 million project is scheduled for completion by 2030.
Local officials welcomed the investment. Kelly Fitzpatrick, chair of the Steuben County Legislature, emphasized the importance of meeting rising electricity demand and aligning with the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) mandates.
NYSEG reaffirmed its commitment to supporting customers in Bath and the surrounding communities, highlighting the ongoing importance of reliable power infrastructure in the region.
