Hitachi Energy Launches Transformer Factory Expansion in Ludvika
Hitachi Energy has officially begun construction on a major expansion of its transformer factory in Ludvika, Sweden, alongside a new test hall for transformer components. The move aims to increase production capacity and meet growing global demand for large AC and DC power transformers.
The expanded Ludvika facility will cover 20,000 m², representing one of the largest investments at the site. New equipment and optimized production flows, including separate unloading areas for trains and trucks, are expected to raise transformer production capacity by approximately 40%. The expansion is projected to create around 300 new jobs, with recruitment and training already underway at a dedicated Training Center. Completion is expected in fall 2027.
Alongside the factory expansion, Hitachi Energy is investing in a new test hall to support ultra-high voltage testing of transformer bushings. This facility will increase routine testing capacity and accommodate both retrofits and third-party deliveries, with completion slated for fall 2026.
This expansion builds on Hitachi Energy’s June 2024 announcement of a broader $330 million (3.7 billion SEK) investment in Sweden, aimed at expanding manufacturing and research across multiple sites and growing the workforce to 8,000 employees by 2027.
The construction start was marked with a symbolic pile-driving ceremony attended by employees, partners, and regional officials, underscoring the significance of Ludvika in Sweden’s sustainable energy sector.
These developments reinforce Hitachi Energy’s role in the global energy transition, strengthening Sweden’s position as a hub for innovative transformer and power grid technology.
