Hydro One to Upgrade Transformer Stations with New 500 kV Transmission Line in Ontario
Hydro One Networks Inc. will develop a new 500-kV double-circuit transmission line from the Bowmanville Switching Station to either Parkway TS, Claireville TS, or Cherrywood TS, including significant transformer station expansions and upgrades, following direction from the Ontario Ministry of Energy and Mines and amendments to its transmission licence by the Ontario Energy Board. The line is expected to be operational in the early 2030s.
The project emphasizes upgrading existing transformer capacity and building new transformer facilities to handle growing electricity demand in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). First Nations communities will have the opportunity to invest a 50% equity stake in the transformer components of the project through Hydro One’s First Nation 50-50 Equity Partnership Model.
“This designation is a major opportunity for Hydro One to strengthen Ontario’s grid by upgrading and expanding key transformer stations,” said David Lebeter, President and CEO of Hydro One.
Additional priority projects include:
-
Reconductoring a portion of the E8V/E9V 230-kV transmission line from Orangeville TS to Essa TS, including station upgrades, expected in 2027.
-
A 230-kV line from Lauzon TS to Lakeshore TS, with associated transformer station expansions, expected in 2032.
Kelly LaRocca, Chief of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, highlighted that incorporating Indigenous knowledge in planning and managing transformer upgrades ensures safer, more reliable electricity for communities.
Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Mines, noted that these transformer station upgrades, paired with new transmission lines, will support SMR electricity integration, economic growth, and job creation across Ontario.
